The Black, White and Blue Temples: where
modern art meets buddhism in Chiang Rai.
White Temple, Wat Rong Khun. It is one of the most recognizable temples in
Thailand. The temple outside the town of Chiang Rai attracts a large number of
visitors, both Thai and foreign, making it one of Chiang Rai’s most visited
attractions. It is a unique temple that stands out through the white color and
the use of pieces of glass in the plaster, sparkling in the sun. The white
color signifies the purity of the Buddha, while the glass symbolizes the
Buddha’s wisdom and the Dhamma, the Buddhist teachings. Entrance 50 Bath /
person.
Wat Phra Kaew, Chiang Rai .This temple
gains historical importance as the place where Emerald Buddha was found. It is
also one of the main centres of buddhist education. It’s famous as the origin
home of green Buddha which graces the Emerald Buddha temple in Bangkok’s Grand Palace. Free entry.
Wat Phra Sing, Chiang Rai. One of Chiang
Rai’s oldest temples. Free entry.
Blue
Temple, Wat
Rong Suea Ten Temple, is an incredibly unique and colourful temple due to its
beautiful blue and gold interior and exterior. This lesser-known temple is still not widely
promoted, so there are less tourists compared to both Wat Rong Khun (White Temple) and the Baan Dam (Black House) Museum. The name translates
as House of the Dancing Tiger: rong is the Thai word for house, suea for tiger
and ten for dancing. In what may prove either to be a disappointment to some or
reassurance to others, there are no real, live tigers at Wat Rong Suea Ten.
The Black House, Baandam museum
. Baan means house and Dam means black. The Black House isn’t just one
structure but a collection of around 40 buildings of varying shapes and sizes
around a peaceful garden. Created by
Thailand national artist Thawan Duchanee. The artist uses all of his
collections as a source of ispiration to his arts. Entrance 80 bath/person
The Golden Triangle is in
Chiang Rai province in the far north of Thailand. The English name comes from
the meeting of Laos , Myanmar and Thailand but to the locals it’s Sop Ruak
where the Mekong river meets Ruak river. These two rivers form a natural
boundary between the three countries Laos , Myanmar and Thailand.
